No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
Rahul Gandhi has launched a scathing attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress following the death of Congress worker Devdeep Chatterjee in Asansol. Alleging that a "Gundaraj" (gangster rule) prevails in West Bengal, Rahul Gandhi criticized what he termed the state government's culture of intimidation and violence. In a strong social media post, he demanded the immediate arrest and strictest punishment for the accused, while also calling for the West Bengal administration to provide full security and financial assistance to the bereaved family of the deceased.
"The post-election murder of Congress worker Debdeep Chatterjee by TMC-linked goons is highly condemnable. My deepest condolences to the grieving family. Today, there is no democracy in West Bengal; TMC's 'Gunda Raj' (rule of goons) prevails. Intimidating, killing, and silencing opposing voices post-polling has become the hallmark of the TMC. Congress politics has never been based on violence, nor will it ever be. We too have lost our workers, yet we have always chosen the path of non-violence and the Constitution. This is our legacy; this is our resolve. The demand is clear: the immediate arrest of all culprits, the strictest possible punishment, and ensuring full security and compensation for Debdeep's family. We will not bow down to this politics that tarnishes India’s non-violent tradition. Justice will prevail," said Rahul in his tweet.
Contrary to these political allegations, the local police have dismissed the theory of political violence in the case. Law enforcement officials have clarified that their investigation points to a tragic personal dispute rather than any political conflict.
According to the police report submitted to the Election Commission, the incident was sparked by an argument over parking near the Bhagat Singh intersection, which escalated into a physical altercation involving the victim and several other individuals. Police have arrested three people in connection with the case so far, with investigations indicating no direct link between the accused and any political party.
